Kempson linked to Dragons move

Darran KempsonDarran Kempson’s Shrewsbury Town career could be nearing an end, with the defender attracting interest from Wrexham. The 23-year-old was one of four players left behind for the pre-season training camp in Spain which began yesterday.

It has emerged that the former Preston and Crewe stopper is now being tracked by the Dragons.

Kempson has been given permission to speak to the Blue Square Premier club by Shrewsbury officials, with the decision now resting with the player who has a further year to run on his contract at Oteley Road.

A player signed by then manager Gary Peters in the wake of the Wembley disappointment in the summer of 2007, Kempson held down a regular starting berth in first half of the last campaign, and made 21 starts and five substitute appearances for Town.

But indications that he was dropping down the pecking order came in February when Kempson was sent out on loan to Accrington.

Hopes of forcing his way into the plans of new boss Paul Simpson rose when he was recalled early from that temporary move.

But those aspirations received a blow when Kempson’s name was missing from the 20-strong squad which was named for Spain.

After impressing on loan, Kempson had attracted interest from Accrington for a permanent move earlier in the summer – only for the Lancashire club to sign another former Town defender, Colin Murdock.

And it now appears Wrexham is the most likely destination for Kempson should he decide his future lies elsewhere.

Simpson has already indicated that he would like to trim his squad down after a glut of summer signings, with striker Guy Madjo, another player not in Spain, attracting interest from Dutch clubs including Go Ahead Eagles.
