Call over plans for sex shop
Saturday 12th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.
More thought should be given to the planned location of a new sex shop in Telford, business leaders claimed today.
The call comes amid mounting opposition to applicant Nicola Dicken’s plans for a licence to operate a new sex shop at 1A Vineyard Road, Wellington.
Dave Riley, president of Wellington Chamber of Commerce, said: “More thought could be given to a suitable location because of the type of business it is.
“There are locations on the outskirts of Wellington which would draw less controversy.”
His call comes as Telford & Wrekin Council licensing chiefs prepare to decide whether to grant a licence to Mrs Dicken, who already runs the Romeo and Juliet sex shop in Ketley Business Park with husband Roger.
Mr Dicken has insisted the shop, if approved, would not admit under-18s and is allowed in Vineyard Road under regulations.
Licensing bosses have had about 50 letters of objection.
Telford & Wrekin Council licensing committee will decide on the application on July 21.

Why not have it. Some have complained about Wellington being full of charity shops, as long as it is adult only, I cannot see the problem.

My god what century are we living in ???
Sex shops are for ordinary people who want to spice up their private lifes.
If you don’t like them, then don’t shop there…simple.

Why does it keep getting called a sex shop?
Can I please have a large bag of sex? Would you like to eat in or take-away?
The shop is not selling sex, but adult products. There really is nothing to worry about. Anne Summers is a successful ‘sex shop’ that has been selling big bags of ‘sex’ for years in houses and high streets since the ’70s yet doesn’t seem to suffer the same complaints.

If Ann Summers can have a shop in Telford shopping centre then what’s the problem? Under 18′s are clearly not allowed in, those with an objection should ‘grow up!’

OMG we have objections by so many people about such a small shop and its location. People worry about children seeing the outside of building and worry about the contents inside…BUT wait one moment isnt there a huge retail store in the telford town centre that stocks the same ‘seedy’ outfits etc that are openly on dispaly. Sounds like its a case if your a major retailer then you are welcome to bring your telford with open arms…but if your a small business man you have to prove your worth to a commitee. Change your name Mrs dicken to Ann Summers and you will be welcomed with open arms!!!!

I have several times had to ‘manage’ questions from my son whilst passing the Ann Summers shop in Shrewsbury. I have had no similar issue passing the ‘Private Shop’ at the bottom of Wyle Cop whose windows are blanked out and is discreet. No issue !

The people of wellington and the town councillers need to move into the 20th century, and be grateful someone wants to open a shop in town, cause wellington hasn”t got anything going for it at the moment.

Even better if they moved into the 21st century.

I can’t imagine why anyone would want to spend their money in such a ‘shop’. Why can’t they do their ‘kinky stuf in the privicy of their own home?
I think Big Brother and other so called tv shows are to blame for this. A brisk walk up the Wrekin followed by a cold shower would do these people some good.

Jean – One step at a time. They are still living in the 19th Century, so need time to adjust.

WHY NOT JUST GET A BROTHEL!!!

The proposed location isnt exactly Wellington centre – so whats the problem? The issue surely should be responsible business people ensuring that they dont sell any of their ‘products’ to anyone underage. There isnt this levbel of ourtcry with Ann Summers so whats the issue – its not like there will be ‘ladies of the night’ hanging around every corner.
Dave Riley would be better spending his energies trying to stop the proposed flat building on the Charlton Arms site, not opposing a shop which sells the odd sex toy!
