Wolves outcasts left out of squad
Friday 11th July 2008, 11:49AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has revealed some of his transfer-listed players could be left behind in his pre-season plans.McCarthy is preparing to take the wraps off his squad for their first friendly at Wrexham tomorrow.
Injured keepers Wayne Hennessey and Matt Murray are out and McCarthy won’t be including wantaway pair Freddy Eastwood and Seyi Olofinjana.
Eastwood is set to complete his long-running move to Coventry while Olofinjana won’t report back until July 21 after being given extra time off following World Cup qualifying action or Nigeria in June.
The Molineux chief still intends to take a 22-man squad to the Racecourse Ground – but with new signings Sam Vokes, Richard Stearman and David Jones to accommodate, Wolves have 34 professionals.
And that means some of those on the list – Darren Ward, Rob Edwards, Darren Potter, Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Elliott – may be squeezed out.
“I’ll be taking 22 players tomorrow and some of the transfer-listed ones will be left behind,” said McCarthy.
“Perhaps I will consider them. There will be other games and they’re all still players at this football club.
“But my view on that is I’d play the players who I know are going to be here first and foremost.”
McCarthy admits there has been interest in the listed players but no one was close to leaving.
Leeds have been linked with Bothroyd and Elliott, Blackpool with Edwards and Southampton with Potter, while Elliott and Potter were offered to Burnley as part of the unsuccessful bid for Kyle Lafferty.
“There are a few things spinning around but nothing certain,” he added.
“There has been interest – we’ve had phone calls about all of them, but everyone’s trying to do their business.”
