Tierney ruled out of Spain by pain
Friday 11th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town’s player of the season Marc Tierney heads the list of five players left out of the squad for next week’s Spanish training camp. The popular left-back will stay at home on the advice of the club doctor because of a groin problem that has sidelined him since Tuesday.
Striker Guy Madjo, defenders Darran Kempson and James Meredith and young goalkeeper Jasbir Singh are the other four who will not be on the flight to Almeria on Sunday.
On Tierney, boss Paul Simpson revealed: “He’s got a rehabilitation programme which he has to follow over the weekend and, if there’s no improvement, he will see a specialist next week to get to the bottom of it.
“He hasn’t trained since Monday, but we’re hoping that it’s nothing serious and that when we get back from Spain he will be able to join in with us again.
“There’s no point taking someone over just to sit around though, so it’s better he stays here and gets treatment.”
Simpson admits the other four stay-at-home players are down the pecking order in the race for first team places.
But he insists the decision not to take them to Spain does not spell the end of their Shrewsbury Town careers.
“We have a situation where we have 20 places available to go, and the 20 who are travelling are obviously ahead of them in my thinking,” said Simpson.
“They’re just going to have to keep working hard. They’re still under contract here and, while they’re with us, they won’t be treated any differently to anyone else.
“They will continue to train with the youth staff next week and work with them.”
Madjo began pre-season on trial with Go Ahead Eagles in Holland, but Simpson has had no more contact from them, or another Dutch club that had shown an interest at one stage.
He also reported no recent inquiries for Kempson who had a spell on loan with Accrington Stanley towards the end of last season.
“His is a position that I felt needed strengthening,” added Simpson. “We’ve brought in Michael Jackson and Shane Sheriff and, at this moment, Darran is down the pecking order.
“There was interest from Accrington at the end of the season, but they haven’t been on to me since.”
