Melua all set for county concert

Friday 11th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Katie MeluaChart-topping, award-winning singer Katie Melua will be performing her first show in Shropshire tonight when she appears on stage at The Quarry in Shrewsbury.

The 22-year-old is in the middle of a six-month world tour which will take her from Canada to Brighton, via Monaco, Germany, Holland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden. Last month she appeared at the Glastonbury festival.

Despite uncertain weather forecasts organisers have promised to do their best to ensure the open-air event goes ahead. A spokesman from promoters IML Concerts said: “About 2,500 tickets have been sold but there are still some available.

“In the event of bad weather, the organisers will do everything to present the concert and it will go ahead even if it is raining.

“The only reason the concert may be cancelled is if there is an electrical storm, when it would be too dangerous to carry on. If that happens then there will of course be refunds available.

“If it does rain, bring an umbrella. They didn’t stop the British Grand Prix last weekend because of the rain, and the performers will be covered.

“It’s unfortunate but we can’t organise the weather. There will be plenty of people selling hot coffee in the Quarry though.”

The concert is due to get under way at 7.30pm.

Gates open at 6pm and tickets will be available on the gate priced at £40 for adults and £20 for children. The event is expected to finish at 10.30pm with a fireworks display.
