Young stars shine at music festival
Thursday 10th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.
One of the young stars from Britain’s Got Talent has made a winning appearance on stage at Llangollen’s International Musical Eisteddfod.
Faryl Smith, 12, reached the final of the ITV talent show with her opera singing which wowed judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan.

But yesterday, the young star from Kettering returned to the eisteddfod with her choir, Masquerade, to take part in the senior children’s choir competition – which they won.
In her third visit to the eisteddfod, Faryl said she was fond of the event and glad to be back.
She said: “I’m back at choir now and back to normal. I love this choir. It’s good to sing in a choir as well, that’s where I started my singing.”
Faryl first appeared at the eisteddfod with the choir in 2005 and returned in 2006 with the choir, as well as singing in the folk song solo competition which she won.
She said: “It was a really good achievement when I was 10 to win as a soloist.
“It’s not really changed. But I like that stage with all the flowers. When I did the solo I looked tiny. It’s a tremendous stage to sing on.”
In the last few months since Britain’s Got Talent finished on our screens, Faryl has been busy touring the country with her fellow finalists and has been approached by several record companies keen to snap up the young star.
But yesterday she hinted that, while she has not signed a deal, she would be recording her first album soon and hopes it will feature some of the tracks she sung on the hit TV show.
“I should start recording in September for an album. That’s all we know at the moment nothing has really been sorted out,” she said.
Since finding fame Faryl has also struck up a close friendship with opera star Katherine Jenkins, who she said has been offering her advice on her career.
Faryl was a surprise visitor to the eisteddfod yesterday. She was due to compete in the folk song solo but organisers had been told she would be unable to take part due to the demands of her new career, so they had not anticipated she would be attending at all. Conductor of the choir, Barry Clark said: “We were so pleased to see her because she’s one of the choir.
“She is not doing a solo because she has had a month away on tour.”
This year’s folk song solo, where competitors had to sing songs from their own country, was won by Bethan Owen, from Anglesey. Bethan gave her winning performance on the pavilion stage in a traditional Welsh costume.
Another young star who was set to attend this week was 11-year-old Gwion Jones, one of the winners of the BBC’s search for an Oliver in I’d Do Anything, but organisers say they are not expecting him to attend due to the demands of his new career.
Gwion, from Camarthenshire, was due to perform in the children’s folk dance groups competition today with Dawnswyr Penrhyd.
* An Indian dance group that was set to take part in the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod for the 16th time has faced visa problems this year and half the group has so far been unable to attend.
The Heritage Dancers from Punjab, India have been a popular sight at the Eisteddfod since 1993. But this year only the child members have been granted visas to attend while the adult group, including the musicians, have had theirs refused.
Rajpal Singh, secretary general of the Punjab Arts Council, who is in Llangollen with the children said: “We are still hoping, even now, we can still go ahead. If they give them the go-ahead they can fly over.”
