Carnival does not need funfair

Thursday 10th July 2008, 11:49AM BST.

LETTER - Why, oh why, are we sitting here yet again with front page headlines depicting Shifnal more like Tombstone in the old Wild West instead of a nice, sleepy, rural town where people once loved to live?

Why have the police, local and county councils allowed this horrid fair to continue unabated when all it brings to the town is drunken violence?

We have a town to be proud of. We have a wonderful carnival each year to be proud of. So why are we sitting back yet again and allowing this vile abomination of a “funfair” to attract elements that are more at home in the Wild West than here in Shifnal?

The carnival takes place over several hours on a Saturday afternoon. Can anybody please explain to me why we need a funfair plonked in the middle of an extremely busy thoroughfare from Thursday afternoon until the early hours of Tuesday morning?

And who benefits from the fair? Speak to local businesses, as I have done, and they will tell you that their takings are actually down in comparison to other weekends. That is, of course, apart from the licensed premises.

I fully support the carnival, but surely the final nail should be firmly driven into the coffin of the fair, whose only benefactors are the faceless people that operate it for their own gain and certainly not for the benefit of this community.
