Albrighton in charge to narrow gap

The Dog Kennel Lane men got much the better of Saturday’s draw in a reduced game as they moved to within 16 points of the long-time leaders.

And Reman captain Mal Serplet has admitted his side must improve to retain their position at the top of the table.

“We have been a bit flat over the last few weeks and this was probably the kicking we needed,” said Serplet.

“There was only one team turned up on Saturday – and it wasn’t us.

“We were out-enthused in every department and the only positive was that we didn’t lose the game and they only got six more points than us.”

Albrighton soon gained control of Saturday’s showdown as they racked up 240-7 in a match reduced to 42 overs.

Matt Wright continued his excellent recent form with 87, while captain Darren Shimmons made 38.

Reman soon found themselves in early trouble at 2-2, before John Wigley steadied the ship with 58.

Mark Bissell finished with figures of 3-40, but Reman held on for a losing draw on 180-7.

“The aim for the day was to make sure we were still in touch and we have done that,” said Shimmons.

Despite being 56-points adrift of leaders Reman, neither of the top two are willing to discount Quatt from the title race.

But their hopes of making in-roads into that deficit were ended by the rain as they entertained fourth placed Madeley.

Craig Jones took 6-35 for Quatt as Madeley were dismissed for 124 in a 45-over-a-side match.

Eugene McCarney then made 37 and Adam Evans 30, the pair putting on 60 for the first wicket in Quatt’s reply.

A trio of wickets then fell to leave the hosts at 77-3 when the rain came after 26 overs.

“It was disappointing because, even though we had just lost a few wickets, we were still very confident of knocking them off,” said club spokesman Adam Evans.

“We have had the last two home matches abandoned now which isn’t helping with trying to get closer to the top two.”
