Choir’s success on BBC TV show
Monday 7th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.
A Shropshire singing group formed just six months ago has made it through to the last 27 of a television search to find the nation’s favourite choir.
The Common Room Choir had been competing against 60 others in the first round auditions of the BBC’s Last Choir Standing, which started on Saturday.
The choir is made up of 16 pupils from Newport’s Adams’ Grammar School.
The next round of the show on Saturday, which has already been recorded, will see them perform in front of about 100 people at the BBC television studios in London, before the final 27 are whittled down to 15.
Musical director Tim Cunningham, of Shifnal, said getting through to the next round “was exciting”.
“We didn’t think we would get through,” said the 18-year-old.”
Clips of the choir filmed by a BBC crew last week are expected to be shown on this Saturday’s show at 7pm on BBC One.
