Railway revamp is to be marked
Friday 4th July 2008, 6:59PM BST.
An ornamental flourish is to be added to the top of a new extension at Bridgnorth’s cliff railway.
The three-foot-high metal finial will be added on Monday to celebrate the completion of the building and the railway’s 116th birthday.
The finial will be added by steeplejacks from Elcock & Wood and will match the existing one already in place on the original railway building.
The Bridgnorth Cliff Railway originally opened to the public in 1892 with an opening ceremony which is still re-enacted today.
Jean Reynolds, the railway owner, said: “The original opening ceremony was very much a grand event and it is fascinating to look back through the books and see how the opening of the railway affected the town and its people.
“It seems very fitting today that to commemorate the railway’s birthday we will now be adding the final touches to the building.”
