Police warning over bank calls

Thursday 3rd July 2008, 9:00AM BST.

telephone.jpgPolice are urging people never to give out any personal details, in particular bank information, to any cold caller.

It follows an incident reported to police in Shropshire on Tuesday.

In it, a man claimed to be able to get bank charges refunded for the householder.

He asked for their account and debit card details, including the security codes on the back. But the victim realised it was a scam and refused to give any information, and then called police.

Constable Tim Weaver, Shropshire Division’s crime reduction officer, said any cold caller asking for bank details over the phone is likely to be a scammer.

He said: “People should never give out personal information, such as their bank or address details, to anyone cold calling them. This includes by phone, email, letter or even personal visits.

“These people will use a whole range of stories to convince you to pass on your personal details.

“If anyone asks you for such details, refuse. If you are concerned you have been the victim of such a scam, call your bank immediately.”
