Wycherley delight at potential

Shrewsbury Town chairman Roland Wycherley today hailed his record-breaking transfer splash by declaring: “It shows our intent.”

Wycherley sanctioned the smashing of the club’s record transfer earlier this week as Nottingham Forest received £170,000 for the services of striker Grant Holt, while former Blackpool captain Michael Jackson has also put pen to paper for Town.
The Oteley Road supremo is refusing to be drawn on predictions for the 2008-9 campaign – but admits the signings display the club’s desire to break into League One in the near future.
“It’s been a very busy week but also a very pleasing one and I’m delighted that Paul (Simpson, manager) has been able to make these signings,” Wycherley told the Shropshire Star.
“I’m not going to make any predictions but it shows nobody should doubt the intent to reach League One as soon as possible.
“I’m pleased with the balance of the squad Paul is assembling. We’ve made some very good signings and I know Paul has got a couple of other targets – I’m really looking forward to the new season.”Wycherley, who took over as chairman in the summer of 1996, admitted he had been affected in the past by a “minority” of supporters “interpreting our total focus on achieving financial stability as a lack of ambition.”
“It was extremely hurtful,” said the Oteley Road supremo. “I think the majority of the people understood what we were trying to do but you always get the minority who want instant success.
“It’s very difficult because there are 92 clubs and only four divisions – so only four clubs can be champions.
“It was vital for us to put to put the financial foundations in place.”
Meanwhile, Simpson remains on the hunt for yet more fresh blood to bolster his squad ahead of next week’s return to training.
Simpson yesterday confirmed his move for Rotherham defender Graham Coughlan had “dragged on” – but it is understood that deal isn’t dead.

Surely the best thing would be a merger between Telford Utd and Shrewsbury Town
They could play at the Bucks head which is a far better stadium.
and be renamed Telford Blue & Ambers
Just a thought to increase potential of our teams
