Supply cut after water main bursts

Friday 27th June 2008, 10:41AM BST.

Almost 2,000 homes and businesses in the Craven Arms area were left without water for up to 11 hours after a water main burst.

Severn Trent Water received the first call at 6.45am yesterday.

Properties in Craven Arms and the nearby villages of Wistanstow and Onibury were affected when a water main suffered two bursts. Water was restored to all customers by 5.30pm.

Stan Mahon, duty manager at Harry Tuffins supermarket in Craven Arms, said staff and customers were inconvenienced.

He said: “The water suddenly went off at around 10.30am. Obviously we had to close the public toilets as there was no running water and we also had to shut the cafe for health and safety reasons.

“To start with most of the customers who arrived here did not know about it so they weren’t too inconvenienced. It wasn’t until 1pm that we heard the news the lack of water was due to a burst water main.”

Mr Mahon said the store ordered in extra stocks of water in case the problem was prolonged. But the water was back on at the store by about 3.30pm.

Sophie Jordan, spokeswoman from Severn Trent said: “The burst affected the flow of water from the reservoir into the local villages. We would like to apologise to all our customers for the inconvenience.”
