OAP’s plight has a happy ending
Friday 27th June 2008, 11:17AM BST.
When Shropshire pensioner Diana Williamson had her handbag stolen she was left distraught and with her faith in human nature in shreds.
Tucked away in her bag had been not only the £140 it had taken her weeks to save for vet’s bills but also photos of her late husband Brian, a camera he bought her and a pen set given to her as a teenager by her parents.
When police officers and staff heard about her plight, they recommended she benefit from the police community fund.
And yesterday Mrs Williamson, 71, from Babbinswood near Oswestry, received a cheque for £140 and a bouquet of flowers from two of the people who helped deal with the theft, public service desk operator, Carole Markham and Community Support Officer, Dave Wagg.
“What had happened to her really tugged at the heart strings and we really wanted to do something to help,” said Carole.
Mrs Williamson’s bag was stolen while she was unloading shopping into her car at Stan’s store, St Martins. She said: “I was so upset because it had taken weeks for me to save the money for the vet’s bill after I had to have my dog put to sleep. I had finally managed to get the money together and was on my way to pay the bill.”
The veterinary practice, Oakwood, joined police to help Mrs Williamson and reduced her bill.
“Everyone has been so kind, they have restored my faith in human nature which, I am afraid had been dented,” she said.
“I hope whoever took my handbag can now understand what a terrible effect it can have on the victim.”
Mrs Williamson had special praise for the role of the Community Support Officer and said it was good that the officers had the time to spend with individuals.

I just wish some how she could get her photos and items back and that would make my week. Lovely she got some help and maybe if the thieves / thief are reading this, you will be older one day and may have treasured things, wouldnt take much to wipe the things clean and post them to the police station.
