Training tower bid for fire station

Thursday 26th June 2008, 7:59PM BST.

A new training tower could be built at Bridgnorth Fire Station to help firefighters practise their drills.

The state-of-the-art tower is planned to replace the existing one which has been in use at the Innage Lane station since it opened in 1964.

Plans for the tower have been submitted to Bridgnorth District Council by the Shropshire Fire Service and will be considered by members of the planning committee in the next few weeks.

The tower will incorporate sections where firefighters can practise using roof ladders, as well as access points to simulate entering a building.

The new tower is one of seven which could be built at stations across Shropshire. If permission is given, the towers will be built at three of the stations this year, with one tower a year being built at the other sites.

Head of resources for the Shropshire Fire Service Andrew Kelcey said the new towers would provide more realistic training opportunities. “The existing towers are no longer considered suitable for the role we are doing,” he said.

“The training we are doing now concentrates more on specific skills, whereas the existing towers can only have ladders placed against them.”

Most of the county’s training is currently done at Telford which has a room which can be filled with smoke to simulate working in the dark.
