Flood-hit watermill will reopen
Thursday 26th June 2008, 11:50AM BST.
One of Shropshire’s most popular tourist attractions – the county’s only working watermill – is due to be re-opened after it was damaged during last summer’s floods.Daniel’s Mill, near Bridgnorth, will officially reopen full time next month after a painstaking operation was completed to restore it to its full working glory.
The mill wheel was put out of action after catching on a wall that was pushed forward by the force of the flood water.
Money to pay for the repair work poured in with members of the public donating more than £1,500.
The picturesque mill features a 38ft cast iron waterwheel producing wholemeal flour traditionally and has been family owned for 200 years. Visitors are taken back in time when the mill wheel turns.
Meanwhile work on Ludlow’s Burway Bridge is ahead of schedule, one year after heavy flooding caused it to collapse.
But repairs to the bridge have had a devastating impact on traders and residents, it has been claimed.
The claims were made at a meeting chaired by Ludlow MP Philip Dunne, with representatives of businesses and residents looking at a plans to revitalise the town.
The bridge is due to fully reopen in October.
Mr Dunne said: “There is no doubt that traders are suffering from the closure of the bridge. The good news is this should re-open after the school holidays but in the meantime the meeting came up with several practical steps to try to encourage trade in the town.”
Jennifer Fullard, for the council’s transport and highways department said early indications were that the bridge should be open to one-way traffic from early September.
