Driver held after early-morning crash

The accident happened shortly before 6am. Smithfield Road was closed by police.A man in his 20s suffered serious head injuries today after the car he was a passenger in mounted a pavement and collided with a tree in Shrewsbury town centre.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the site of the accident on Smithfield Road, next to Shrewsbury’s John Davies Boxing Centre, shortly before 6am.

Firefighters had to cut the male passenger out of the silver Honda Accord and police arrested the driver on suspicion of drink driving.

Smithfield Road was closed off to traffic at 6.45am and remained closed for more than three hours.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a car which had collided with a tree. A man in his 20s was trapped inside the vehicle. Fire crews freed him under the supervision of ambulance staff.

“He had suffered a head injury and was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

Richard Ewels, spokesman for Shrewsbury police said: “The driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken into custody at Shrewsbury Police Station.”

The road was closed throughout this morning’s rush-hour but minimal delays were caused to traffic.
