Shropshire lorry drivers are to join a third protest over the rocketing fuel prices which will see hauliers lobbying the Government outside Parliament.

Following a meeting with Metropolitan Police on June 10 a protest will be held next Wednesday, starting with an escorted drive-through in Parliament Square.

All drivers will converge in advance on the A40 at 10am.

Police will then escort about 100 trucks at a time on a drive-through Parliament Square.

Among the trucks involved will be a number from Shropshire including drivers from Derek Marston and Sons Transport, Halfway House, and Jordan’s Transport in Shrewsbury.

Jim Jordan said: “We are trying to make drivers aware of it, we want to try and wake a few people up about this issue.

“Members of the Road Haulage Association will be aware of it but others won’t and we want as many people as possible to take part.”

A spokesman for Transaction 2007 who are organising the protest urged the public to lobby Parliament on the day: “TransAction 2007 is urging every body to get involved in this action, as it doesn’t feel its quite got the message through to the Government yet.”

The lobby will begin at 11.30am in Old Palace Yard until about 1pm.

The Fuel Price Regulator, which is set to be discussed in Parliament on Wednesday, seeks to offset the increase in VAT receipts received by Government as a result of the rising price of fuel with a corresponding reduction in fuel duty and would, the RHA believes, help stabilise fuel costs for hauliers.

RHA chief executive Roger King said: “It was always our intention to lobby Parliamentarians in support of the Regulator on the day.”
