Aircraft crash leaves woman hurt
Tuesday 24th June 2008, 1:55PM BST.
A 32-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when the paraglider she was flying ploughed into a remote Shropshire hillside.
The woman is understood to have been flying the aircraft alone above the Long Mynd yesterday.
The woman, believed to be from West Sussex, suffered abdominal, back and “serious” leg injuries in the incident which happened after she got into difficulties at about 1.30pm over the Long Mynd, in south Shropshire.
Two land ambulances were sent to the scene of the accident but were unable to reach the injured woman due to the narrow roads and rural location so the air ambulance was called in from Cosford.
After arriving, the crew from the air ambulance spent almost an hour dealing with the incident before airlifting the paraglider to hospital.
The woman was flown to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where her condition was reported today to be stable.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “On arrival we administered pain relief and immobilised the victim whose paraglider had crashed into the hillside.
“She was flown to Selly Oak Hospital where she is now in a stable condition,” she said
She added that bystanders helped ambulance crews to move the woman.
A West Mercia Police spokesman added that police were informed of the incident at 1.45pm.
