Tributes as teen loses cancer fight
Friday 20th June 2008, 11:50AM BST.
The parents of a “loving” Shropshire girl have paid an emotional tribute to their daughter who lost her battle with cancer at the age of 19.Charlotte Haynes, of Broseley, had successfully fought cancer twice but when it returned a third time there was nothing that could be done to save her.
The teenager, a former pupil at William Brookes School, passed away on Saturday, at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Charlotte, who had a 17-year-old sister, had been in her first year of university at Chester. She was fulfilling her dream of training to become a primary school teacher.
But she returned to Broseley most weekends to visit her parents Stephen and Linda, her sister Rebecca and boyfriend Lewis Fellows.
She also worked in The Lion in Broseley as a waitress.
It was in August 2005 at the age of 16 when Charlotte first went to the doctors to have a mole checked out.
She was told the devastating news it was a malignant melanoma.
But she had it removed, underwent an operation and was given the all clear.
Just over a year later it returned, but again she had the mole removed and made a full recovery once more.
Mrs Haynes said when her daughter came home in Easter this year she suffered bad headaches and spasms in her arm.
“She went to the hospital and had a scan but they found the melanoma had spread to six sites in her brain.
“Because of the amount there was nothing they could do.”
She was offered radiography but declined, preferring to carry on as best as she could while taking medication to reduce the swelling in her head.
Mrs Haynes said: “It was on May 16 that she was admitted to RSH and that’s where we stayed. Towards the end she got a lot worse. Her boyfriend came the night before she died and gave her a ring.
“She knew he had given her the ring and she smiled,” she added.
“The next morning she seemed as if she had gone into a coma.”
Mr Haynes said: “She was always smiling no matter what.
“She had a great determination whatever was thrown at her.”
Her funeral service is being held at The Church of All Saints in Broseley on Tuesday at 2pm.
