Wrexham new boy is winging in
Thursday 19th June 2008, 10:31AM BST.
Wrexham have moved quickly to fill the void left by young winger Matty Done, who signed for rivals Hereford earlier this week.
Boss Brian Little has brought in 20-year-old midfielder Simon Whalley, who put pen to paper on a one-year deal at The Racecourse yesterday afternoon.
The former Accrington Stanley winger will be remembered by Dragons supporters for scoring the third of three goals against Wrexham in North Wales in a 3-1 victory last season.
He found himself to be surplus to requirement at Accrington, however, and was released at the end of the season. The signing will re-assure supporters concerned about the loss of 19-year-old Done, who had been one of the club’s most exciting attacking players.
The Oswestry-born midfielder was out of contract this summer and has opted to move to the club that tried to capture his signature during the January transfer window.
An undisclosed payment has been agreed between the two clubs as Done was under 24.
And Hereford chief Graham Turner expressed his delight after completing the signing of Done.
“You have to have pace in the side and Matt is very quick – supporters may remember him last season when Wrexham came to Edgar Street when he caused us some problems early on” said Turner
“He’s got the ability to go past full backs and I think he can get better.
“His first ball and his goal scoring can be improved so he is another player we are positive of enhancing.”
