County review of parking laws
Thursday 19th June 2008, 11:27AM BST.
A county-wide review of parking laws has been launched after a string of complaints were made about Shropshire wardens.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council leader Peter Nutting said he had called for the review because he has received letters and e-mails complaining about ParkRight, the firm which is responsible for parking enforcement, in several towns.
Councillor Nutting said there were also concerns about the financial impact of the scheme, stating that the “cost of ParkRight is higher than originally thought”. The firm took over parking enforcement in Shropshire in November 2006.
Shropshire County Council today confirmed the review, which has been called with just five months to go until ParkRight’s contract in the county ends, will include all of the councils which are partners in the scheme.
Councillor Nutting said: “I attended a public meeting in Church Stretton last week. It was clear that even in places like Church Stretton there is huge disquiet about the way ParkRight operate. I receive complaints weekly, if not daily, about ParkRight. I’ve instigated a complete review of the service.
“From my perspective it’s because of complaints I’ve received but I do acknowledge we do need to review it because the cost of ParkRight is higher than originally thought.”
Gareth Owens, SABC assistant council manager, said no other firms had yet bid to take over the contract – but none had been invited.

I hope this is stamped on immediately; the local council listening to the public. This could get completely out of hand and we could end up with the government listening to electors too. And then there’s the possibility of the EU listening to the Irish voters. It could be all too much for people to take.

what’s wrong with PARK-RITE? they do a great job, since they started i can park outside my own house in mountfield for the first time ever, i can drive through town with minimal congestion and I can use loading bays for example to nip to the cash point, all because criminal parking has all but ceased due to their vigilance, well done boys in blue, keep it up and ignore the negative comments of this elected lay person,

Henry, please expalin how “nipping to the cash point ” shoul allow you to use the loading bay ??Im hoping the boys in blue place a ticket on your screen !!

The complaints are not about parking enforcement the ar about the manner in whicyh they are enforced.
The situation in large towns is different from the small market towns where traders are feeling the pinch from the current economic tate of affairs.
Even a small amount of public disquiet can result in people going elsewhere.
Tolerance and discresion are a must in these towns.

Entirely agree with Andy, it’s not what they do it’s the way they do it.
I knew one of the Blue Meanies who had been a Yellow Hatted Traffic Warden. She left ParkRight because they were told in a staff meeting that they could exercise no discretion or display any initiative.

“Henry Street” – If you are using loading bays to “nip to the cashpoint” you will get a well-deserved penalty charge. Loading bays are provided to enable legitimate delivery drivers to carry out their work. Anyone not seen to be loading or unloading goods (in most cases the use of a trolley is mandatory) is liable to be booked. Sorry mate, but you have joined the “Criminal parkers” that you despise.

if you didnt park illegally then there would be no call for parking attendants to give out tickets.
i believe they do a good job, make it easier for traffic to move around the towns. and i have found the ludlow team to be especilly helpful. there local knowledge goes a long way. well done keep up the good work.

Henry, park right cannot stop people parking out side your house in Mountfields as there are no restrictions.I would not park there myself and go into town, i think it rather rude.
As for parking in a loading bay and “nipping to the cash point”I’ve tried that ,and they do not like it.They say “evidence of loading and unloading must be observed” loading cash into your wallet will not count. If ilived in Mountfields i would not drive into town to use a cashpoint.

how can you have ‘discretion’ about being on a double yellow line – its a black or white issue – dont try to pretend there is grey in between – its not legal or it is – you all know the law
