Fresh bid to reopen club
Monday 16th June 2008, 12:00PM BST.
A Shropshire nightclub shut down after its licence was revoked could reopen.
An application is being made for a fresh licence to open Brileighs in Market Street, Oakengates, under a new owner.
The venue had its licence revoked in March after undercover police discovered a string of problems including underage drinking, disorder and street brawls.
The decision to revoke the licence was taken by Telford & Wrekin Council’s licensing committee using tough new powers. It followed a two-day closure order last July after a brawl in which three people were injured.
Businessman Leigh Gregson today said he was in the process of buying Brileighs, subject to the licence bid being approved.
Mr Gregson launched the club in 2003 and ran it for two-and-a-half years.
He said: “We’d have a name change, a big refurbishment and it would be aimed at a more mature crowd, mainly the over 25s.
“If we can bring it back, it will bring people into the town, supporting restaurants and pubs, and that’s got to be a good thing.”
Mr Haroon Rashid, owner of the club, confirmed he was in the process of selling it to Mr Gregson.
If the licence is approved, the club would be allowed to open from 5pm to midnight on Monday to Wednesday, 5pm to 3am on Thursday to Saturday and from noon to 11pm on Sundays.
Councillor Alan Maddy, member of Oakengates Town Council, will bring the application to the attention of his fellow councillors at their next meeting tonight.
He said he was worried about residents getting disturbed in the early hours of the morning.
