Simpson to roll back the years
Saturday 14th June 2008, 12:00PM BST.
Paul Simpson rolls back the years tomorrow – by playing for the club his Shrewsbury Town side will face in the Carling Cup at the start of next season, writes James Garrison.
Simpson will captain Carlisle in the Northern Masters event at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, the indoor football tournament broadcast by Sky for veteran and retired players.
The Town boss spent three years with his home-town club as player and manager, guiding them into League One after they dropped out of the Football League.
And he is looking forward to leading Carlisle into battle with stars of yesteryear from Darlington, Hartlepool, Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough at the Northern Masters, where one place in the Grand Final will be up for grabs.
“I’ve played in it for about the last five years with Manchester City and we have won it once,” said Simpson.
“I’m looking forward to it and it’s good fun – but when you get there and put the strip on, everybody is desperate to win.
“I’ve kept myself in decent shape over the summer which I think is important when you are a manager so we will see how it goes.”
Town learned in yesterday’s draw they will take on Carlisle in the first round of the Carling Cup in the week commencing August 11.
