Litter bill now tops £700,000
Saturday 14th June 2008, 11:35AM BST.
Shrewsbury taxpayers are forking out more than £700,000 a year to pay for the cost of clearing up litter across the borough, a town pressure group has revealed.
Ron Iremonger, chairman of the Tidy Shrewsbury Group, said litter was a huge problem in the area and a crackdown was now being launched to tackle the worst offenders.
He said members had been working closely with Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council to look at problems with chewing gum disposal and cigarette butts and have formed a new sub group to devise ways of tackling the anti-social problem.
Mr Iremonger said they had also been lobbying the authority to issue fines for littering and have been the catalyst in the recent deployment of CSOs to assist in issuing fixed penalty notices within Shropshire.
The group now has 31 volunteers representing individual wards across the area.
Derek Caddy, public amenities manager for SABC, said the authority was fully in support of the work carried out by the Tidy Shrewsbury Group.
