Home from home for Town’s boss
Friday 13th June 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Paul Simpson will go head-to-head with former employees and home town club Carlisle in his opening cup game in charge at Shrewsbury Town.
Today’s Carling Cup first round draw pitted Town with a home tie against the Cumbrians, who suffered the agony of losing last season’s League One play-off semi-final to Leeds United to a last-minute goal.
Simpson spent three seasons at Carlisle after taking over as manager five games into the 2003-4 season.
Despite the Cumbrians suffering relegation out of the Football League that campaign, they bounced back in style under Simpson with successive promotions into League One.
And, even taking away his personal connections, Simpson admits it’s an occasion for Town to look forward to.
“It’s a fantastic draw – not just for me personally but also for the club,” said the Shrewsbury boss.
“You want a home draw in the early stages of the competition and to get Carlisle as well is going to generate interest.
“It’s going to be a hell of a test for us because they are a very good club.
“It’s one for everyone to look forward to and hopefully we can get ourselves through to the next round.”
The draw provides Simpson with the chance to do battle with his home town club – and some old friends.
“The first text I had when the draw was announced was from Fred Story, the Carlisle owner,” added Simpson.
“My spell there were three of the best years of my football career – I had some great times there.
“They are my home town club and the club I supported as a boy.
“I have got the utmost respect for John Ward (Carlisle manager) and it’s one everyone can really look forward to.”
The tie will be played during the opening week of the season, with the most likely date Tuesday, August 12.
