Darters aim to turn off The Power
Friday 13th June 2008, 11:49AM BST.
Two Shropshire darters are on collision course with the world’s greatest ever player this weekend.
Bridgnorth’s Jonathan Overton and Telford’s Derek Box both find themselves on the same qualifying boards as 13-times world champion Phil Taylor in two Players Championship events at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate.
Overton’s chance comes on Sunday and, should he beat Michael Barnard or Lionel Sams in his first match he will meet Taylor – providing the Stoke-based player defeats Gary Barnett.
Elsewhere in Sunday’s draw Box will take on Fraser Hill in his opening match, while Glyn Humphries – also from Telford – meets Wes Newton.
Box’s chance at a tilt at Taylor comes tomorrow – but he must win three matches, starting with a game against Louis Blundell – to have his chance at going head-to-head with “The Power.”
Overton begins his weekend by taking on Dennis Smith, while Glyn Humphries awaits the winner of the preliminary round game between Sams and Gary Mawson, the runner-up in last week’s Blue Square UK Open at Bolton.
