Chris is table football crazy
Thursday 12th June 2008, 11:50AM BST.
As Euro 2008 unfolds, minus the likes of Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, one Shropshire man is flying the flag for England.Chris Short, of Shawbirch, Telford, is preparing to fly to Vienna to battle it out at the table football World Cup.
The 29-year-old is currently ranked about 24th in the world in the game that has been growing in popularity.
He reckons high concentration and clever tactics are key to succeeding in the game and has been practising hard ahead of this weekend’s competition.
Mr Short, a sports shop manager at Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill, said: “I started playing back in 1996 and I’ve carried on ever since then. It’s become very competitive and it’s quite big across Europe.
“I travel around every year to different tournaments. I’ve been to Spain, France, Portugal, Denmark, Austria and Belgium.
“I play in a circuit throughout the season and you have get a high enough ranking points to qualify.”
He said the competition would see groups of three or more players battle it out before the 48-strong field is whittled down to two.
