Brisbourne’s great Chester re-run

It’s the last race at the annual midweek June horse race meeting at Chester – it must be the Mark Brisbourne show, writes James Garrison.The Shropshire trainer notched up an incredible 1-2-3 in the Roodee finale 12 months ago. And the handler, from Nesscliffe near Shrewsbury, almost matched the amazing achievement last night.
Instead he settled for a 1-2 in the extended 1m 4f lady amateur riders handicap with 7-1 shot Thorny Mandate, ridden by Miss Alyson Deniel, edging out another Brisbourne hope Gamesters Lady, who was returned at odds of 14-1.
“It was a nice feeling to get the 1-2, it was the first one of the year,” said Brisbourne, who had five of the 14 runners in the race.
“People ask why we put five in but the owners we have are mainly from the Shropshire, Cheshire and Liverpool area and they want to see their horses run at their local track.
“I always tell them if we are putting a few in and they all take their chances and have to be good sports regardless of the result.”
Brisbourne went 61 days without a winner until last week.
“We had a poor April and a slow May but we have had a few seconds, third and fourths in the last week or so,” he added.
