Shocked Ward to fight for his shirt

Tuesday 10th June 2008, 11:49AM BST.

Darren WardA shocked Darren Ward is ready to fight for his future at Wolves despite being transfer-listed by manager Mick McCarthy. The 29-year-old central defender, introduced to Molineux as one of McCarthy’s key summer signings a year ago, was surprised to find himself on the “not wanted” list after just 30 appearances.

But the Londoner does not believe that McCarthy’s decision to put him up for sale will necessarily spell the end of his Wolves career.

“I was disappointed that the conversation I had with the manager became a transfer list situation but I don’t necessarily want to leave because Wolves is a great club,” says Ward.

“I’m 29, and not yet near my best, and if Wolves want me to stay I will.

“I think I made most appearances of our centre halves last season.

“There were some difficult situations and it was my first season at a new club getting to know everything but I thought I did well.

“The manager has his thoughts but if I get another chance I will be the best again like I did at Palace and at Millwall when I got Player of the Year.

“If the manager wants to change things that’s his decision and I’m just employed by the club.

“I have no problem with coming back here and trying to get back in because I love the club. Wolves are a big club who should be in the Premier League.”
