New spy cameras plan for borough
Wednesday 4th June 2008, 12:00PM BST.
Three new spy cameras to extend Shrewsbury’s CCTV network could soon be installed in a bid to stamp out anti-social behaviour in the town.
The CCTV columns have been strategically chosen in response to problems with anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council which has applied for planning permission for the cameras says that they will be black and have been designed to fit in with the street scene.
They have been earmarked for Frankwell, Longden Coleham and St Alkmund’s Place.
Bosses say the Frankwell camera will cover areas such as The Stew, Welsh Bridge and sections of the towpath.
It will also cover Mardol Gardens “which has seen a number of potential suicide attempts” and the area below Frankwell Footbridge which officials say is a “key area of anti-social behaviour”.
All the cameras will work via a microwave link from an existing camera which allows the best use of capital expenditure provided by the council and also means the least amount of work needing to be done on site as no ducting and cabling is required between the cameras.
A design and access statement which has been submitted with the planning applications says: “The columns and dome cameras will match the existing asset stock, which are designed to fit into the urban and historic environment within Shrewsbury.
“The sites were chosen following consultation with the CCTV Working Group where specific coverage is required following problems with anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder.
“The St Alkmund’s Place Site is located in the public highway at the end of Church Street adjacent the wall to St Alkmund’s Church.
“The camera should act as an aid to help protect the historic buildings in this area as various acts of vandalism have been experienced and this is a key link within the town centre and used as a short cut.”

Raise the drinking age to 21 and there will be no need to spend vast sumson CCTV’s.
Drink is the main cause of anti-socila behaviour

I agree, ban drinking for all but a priveledged few I say, perhaps say only those with a full time job and children, that will keep them responsible

Brian- i completey disagree with your comment. The legal drinking age at the moment is 18, and there are still tons of underage drinkers on the streets. So how is raising it to 21 going to help? Youngsters will always find a way of getting alcohol. And by the way; this article does not necessarily refer to alcohol as the problem.

As a former publican I must vehemently protest at Brian’s suggestion of raising the drinking age to 21. The vast majority of unsocial behaviour in my establishment was caused by middle aged people, the younger people very rarely caused any problems.

Is drink the cause or an excuse for poor education and bad parenting. Alcohol is definitely a contributing factor, but in a world without alcohol the trouble would still be there and the trouble makers would be the same people!

brian & andy, why raise the drinking age? did u drink at the age of 19/19/20 n 21? were you a little angel? I DONT THINK SO! the government these days think about the older generation not the younger, the age limit for ciggarettes has gone up n now people plan for the alchahol? raise the age limit and see an increase in trouble! think before you speak!

Don’t think raising drinking age to 21 will work, teenagers will just get older people to buy alcohol for them, just like they do now.Anyway 18/21 whatever age doesn’t seem right when you can join the army at 16 and be sent away to war; old enough to fight, but not to drink?
