Celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Shrewsbury’s most famous son Charles Darwin were due to be launched in London tonight.More than 30 organisations, including Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, are expected to attend the Darwin200 launch at the Natural History Museum.
A variety of projects – including a special memorial garden – are being drawn up to mark the occasion next year (2009).
Museums, scientific associations, the media and central government have been meeting to plan the campaign for the last two years under the leadership of The Natural History Museum.
Jon King, Darwin co-ordinator for Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, who will be in London for the event, said: “It’s been a privilege to represent SABC at Darwin200 and its clear that Shrewsbury’s role in the Darwin story is taken very seriously.”
