Cheers as Joe keeps a clean sheet

Joe Hart in goal for EnglandThe day Town fans have been waiting for finally arrived after Joe Hart made his debut for England against Trinidad and Tobago, writes our Shrews Blogger James Pugh.

Well done Joe and thank you to Man City for the £500,000 we will get which will hopefully be used sensibly to sign decent players.

The main thing he needed to do was keep a clean sheet – which he did, although he did look understandably nervous, especially when coming for crosses.

I thought commanding his area was one of his main weaknesses when he played for the Town, but with games under his belt and the more experienced he becomes at this level, then I am sure he will be England’s number one for along time.

I was very surprised and disappointed that Joe didn’t make his debut last week against USA.

To me this was a strange decision. Everybody knows by now what David James can do, including Mr Capello. It was the perfect match to blood Joe against a poor opposition at Wembley. But thankfully we didn’t have to wait long after this to get our wish.

On the transfer front, a name that I have heard mentioned to join the Town is yet another player Paul Simpson has worked with before – Preston striker Karl Hawley.

He has a fantastic goalscoring record in the lower leagues and was a big reason why Carlisle have had a lot of success in recent years. I think he would be a fantastic signing for us and would complement the strikers we have got at the moment.

Whether he would drop two divisions two join us I doubt very much, but if he enjoyed working with Simpson at Carlisle then you never know.

I know some fans have questioned Simpson already, after he has only signed players he has worked with before and isn’t looking very far.

For me this is nonsense. It can only be a positive thing that he signs players he knows because he will know their qualities and how they can be improve. There’s always a greater risk signing players who you haven’t worked with before.

It was good to hear the news recently that Kelvin Langmead is confident of being fit for the new season after making encouraging progress from a knee injury. Towards the end of last season I thought he wasn’t at his best and was struggling with the injury which was failing to clear-up.

If Town are to be successful next season we Need Langmead back to his best and I think he should stay in best position at the back rather than switch to a striker. What do fans think?

Karl Hawleys name was being thrown around the terraces as early as Dagenham away just after Simpson took charge, at the time it was scoffed at as being unrealistic due to the money involved to bring him here, maybe now with the Joe Hart windfall it is more realistic.

To bring Hawley in would probrably use up most of the £500,000 when wages for 3 years are factored in and Spending all the money on one player would be a gamble, saying that a 25 goals a season striker is essential to get out of this division, do we have one already in Constable? I am not sure but have faith in Paul Simpson to deliver.
