County wait to hear fate
Saturday 31st May 2008, 11:49AM BST.
Shropshire’s fate in the MCCA Trophy will be decided tomorrow – even though they are not in action themselves.
Skipper James Ralph’s side lie top of group one of the prestigious cricket competition, having won two of their four group games.
And all they can do now is sit back and watch to see if any of their rivals overhaul them in the last round of matches this weekend.
Second-placed Cheshire host Cumberland, while Oxfordshire entertain Bedfordshire, the only side who are unable to finish in the top two and progress to the quarter-finals.
A Cheshire victory would see them overhaul Shropshire to top the group, but Ralph’s men would still progress as runners-up if Oxfordshire fail to beat Befordshire.
Should Oxfordshire win their game, then it will be time to turn to the calculators as the two sides would be level on points and places would be decided on net run rate.
If Shropshire do end up in the top two places then they would meet one of the sides from group two in the quarter-finals on Sunday, June 15. And that looks like being either Norfolk or Staffordshire.
