Cigarette butts blight beauty spot

a_discarded_cigarette.jpgOne of Shropshire’s most revered beauty spots is being blighted by cigarette butts now the smoking ban is in full force, it has been claimed.

Traders have taken it upon themselves to sweep up the influx of cigarette ends which are being dropped in Church Stretton.

District councillor Dr Charles West is now urging residents to think of quitting to save local traders from the task and keep the town in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty looking picturesque.

Surely the District Council could employ someone to catch these litter louts and prosecute. If the problem is as bad as this, then the fines would easily pay for the warden. Unfortunately, many smokers do not see their cigarette ends as litter, in the same way as they refuse to recognise the harm their addiction does.

More bins should be provided for the ends to go in. And anyone seen disposing of them in the incorrect manner should be charged or made to clean up for 10 mins.

Take an old bacci tin and take your butts home with you. Easy.

even easier is to put fags up to £10 a pack, this would discourage smoking and help to pay for 10p reduction on fuel duty
