Pioneering pre-school is praised

A Shropshire village pre-school has received glowing praise after being classed as “outstanding” by Ofsted inspectors.

Condover Pre-School, near Shrewsbury, which takes children aged two to five, has been congratulated for its “exceptionally high quality” of teaching both inside the classroom and at its weekly Forest School.

The school was one of the first in Shropshire to take children outdoors on a weekly basis to expand their learning.

Ofsted praised staff for their teaching, which is offered in morning or afternoon sessions, or as full day care.

“Children relish being in the setting,” said Ofsted inspector Josephine Hammick. “Children are inspired by topics that are fun, stimulating, interesting and relevant.”But it was not just the teaching inside the classroom which impressed the inspector. Outside the children were seen to “relish” their experience at Forest School.

Ms Hammick said: “They relish projects such as den building, nature trails and bridge making. The children benefit greatly from the fresh air and being able to let off steam in a well-planned environment.”

Condover Pre-School chair, Sam Scott, said: “We know we have an excellent pre-school here and we’re delighted that Ofsted recognised that – but the children are the best judges we have, and they simply love coming here.”
