Month of activities to relaunch centre

Monday 26th May 2008, 11:30AM BST.

A popular arts centre in Shrewsbury, which organises activities and events for children, is relaunching itself as a centre of music and media.

The Belmont Arts Centre will now become the Hive and a new summer holiday brochure has been put together with workshops, events, live music and children’s theatre.

To celebrate the relaunch there will be a month of activities culminating in an open afternoon and summer solstice party on June 20.

The day will start with Music Time for under-fives and there will be live music and face painting.

Artist Ian Cook will use remote controlled cars with tyres dipped in paint to create a piece of art based on the new logo.

In the evening, refreshments and a bar will be available and there will be lots of local artwork on display. Admission to the event is free and tickets are available from the Hive reception in advance.

Alyson Lanning, director, said: “Building on the success of Belmont Arts Centre, the Hive aims to be at the core of creativity for young people both in Shrewsbury and the wider region.

“I hope that the new programme of summer activity will attract young people to the Hive, from fun puppet shows for our younger audience to the music and media workshop for the 13 to 18 year group.

“This is a time of exciting change for the Hive team and we are looking forward to welcoming old friends and new participants and guests to the Hive in the coming weeks as we introduce our music, media, performance and gallery programme for the next summer season.

“The Hive appreciates funding support from the Arts Council England, Shropshire County Council and Youth Music, for our core activity, and programme and our other major supporters for helping to fund the wide variety of projects we are involved in.”
