Worker rescues accident victim

Friday 16th May 2008, 11:50AM BST.

A quick-thinking forklift driver rescued a colleague whose ankle was trapped beneath granite worktops after an accident at a workshop near Oswestry.

The man used a forklift truck to remove the worktops from his colleague’s leg, the ambulance service said today.

The accident happened at Granite Craft’s workshop on Rednal Industrial Estate at 11.30am yesterday.

An ambulance crew was called and took the injured man to hospital.

Today a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival crews found a 43-year-old man whose leg had been freed from beneath a tonne of worktops made of granite.

“A fast-acting colleague lifted the worktops off the man’s leg with a forklift truck prior to the crew arriving.

“Crews gave the man pain relief and his left ankle was placed into a vacuum splint before being taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment.”
