Town’s trade to get boost

Traders in Shrewsbury are gearing up for a “shopper’s paradise” event set to attract hundreds of visitors.
The county town, which claims to have the largest number of independent retailers in the country, is holding a celebration day on May 31 to mark the end of a controversial £1 million street enhancement scheme.
The county council programme has caused traffic disruption and been blamed for causing trade to plummet in the town.
Hannah Taylor of fashion outlet Zebra in Fish Street, said there would be a host of fun activities on offer to visitors to Shrewsbury during the “Shop in the Loop” day.
“We are very proud of our fantastic range of independent shops in Shrewsbury and our May 31 open day will include discounts, street entertainers and free park and ride,” she said.

I thought with the headline “Towns trade to get a boost” the story would be SABC had packed up and gone early.
Never mind, sure if you put the SABC in one of the local breweries, with a list of names, invitations and envelopes, they still couldn’t organise a party.

The morons are both Xphisto and Andrew it is Shropshire County Council doing the works.
May be it is time these two gumpy old men got a life and started to try to understand what they claim to be experts on.What do they ever do which is constructive.Xphisto obviously has not been to Shrewsbury for a while or will his bus pass not make it this far.
It takes much more brains to know what you do not know rather than what you think you know. But there againg life in a third world village must be so boring to have to keep on looking back.

Andrew and Xphisto both share views which I have heard widely expressed across Shrewsbury – and yes I do live here and no I won’t need a bus pass for many many years.

shropshire cc highways hopefully will finish their latest roadworks in 2 weeks time, one wonders if they have any future plans to shock the traders in town. it may stop a few regulars visiting but the tourists and grockles as we call them in devon will still flock to the country’s premier town and my most beautiful birth place. floreat salopia and even i am flocking up there next month!

My point is simple for those who need it to be simple. Complain about those doing the work not just for the sake of it. As someone with a busness relient on Shrewsbury I get sick of ill informed comment and blame. At least SABC get off their back sides and do things to try to help us survive when SCC seem hell bent in wrecking Shrewsbury. If this is not clear enough then phone you local county councilor and ask them what next they have planned for Shrewsbury. Ask them about Pride Hill for a starter.

For the information of R Jaggs I am far from retirement age and from the comments I have read following his neither Andrew Finch or myself are alone in what is fair criticism of the dreadful and irreversible damage being done to Shrewsbury by BOTH authorities.
Yes it is indeed Shropshire County Council (via contractors) carrying out what is unarguably necessary work in the town. BUT
R Jaggs misses the point (as it has to be said he has many times in the past). I was contrary to R Jaggs misguided and ill founded comment visiting Shrewsbury just two weeks ago and found it a shoppers paradise (if you like charity shops!)
Finally our ‘third world village’ is so backward that our council tax is €140 (£86) a year which includes refuge collection and road sweeping (& disinfecting) twice weekly, free shoppers parking in our main towns and no requirement for bus passes because everyone over 60 travels free (not including me).
R Jaggs you are indeed a very sad person that vents very silly beliefs and assumptions about both people you know NOTHING of and a town that is now sadly beyond recovery to its former beauty and vibrance.
But R Jaggs all is not lost for you we can I am sure forgive you for your total ignorance and only hope that you will one day just one day get to grips with contributing to debates in a sensible and fact based way.
