Hurry up with town restaurant

Friday 16th May 2008, 11:49AM BST.

LETTER - As a resident of Ellesmere and now, unfortunately, an ex-customer of The Boathouse, I share the frustration of Charles Roberts (Shropshire Star, May 7) – the owner of a business that gave pleasure to many – at the failure so far of the county council to pull its finger out and get the refurbishment under way.

Ellesmere has a bitter experience of one blighted scheme, The Wharf Development, which until recently was a picture of neglect and decay. Happily that situation has now been rectified, and congratulations to those who shepherded the scheme to fruition.

A bit of the same energy and vigour is now required as far as The Boathouse and Cremorne Gardens is concerned.

During the glorious spring weather of the last week The Boathouse presented a forlorn sight, closed and derelict, and surrounded by wire mesh fencing. What a welcome to the town.

In happier times the many visitors to The Mere would have been able to avail themselves of the excellent fare and service that Charles Roberts and his charming staff provided.

Alas, no more, and the best we are promised is a possible opening – at Christmas. I hope the redevelopment of Cremorne Gardens does not share the same fate. Come on you councillors and planners

Mike Hennessey, Ellesmere
