Review on bus service complaints
Thursday 15th May 2008, 12:05AM BST.
Councillors in Shrewsbury are considering whether to scrap a partnership with bus firm Arriva following a string of complaints about the quality of buses in the town.
A special group has been set up to stage a wide-ranging review into the service covering everything from cleanliness to punctuality.
The Bus Quality Partnership is between Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Shropshire County Council and Arriva.
The review group includes SABC councillors Dr Maxwell Winchester, Keith Roberts, Stephen Williams, Chris Freestone and Joyce Allaway, who say they have received complaints from bus users dissatisfied with the age of buses, their availability, the inappropriateness of routes, prices and frequency of service.
A statement from the council says: “The group will investigate the bus quality partnership and make a recommendation for it to be extended, enhanced or terminated.”
Councillor Maxwell Winchester, chairman of the review group, said: “I am extremely concerned about the way in which the partnership is operating.
“We are particularly interested in hearing the views of bus users.”
County Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said: “SCC knows of the bus partnership review group but are not involved with them. However, we are happy to work in partnership with other groups to develop bus services.”
Nobody from Arriva was available to comment today.

Scrap busses, over subsidised waste of public funds to ferry unemployed people around. Plus we could then convert all bus lanes to ‘prestige car lanes’…. why should poor people get where they are going quicker than I should? ;)

today travelling from work got on the 44 at oakengates which got to the town centre at 5.27 the driver told us to get off and go down to stand e for the next one,i could not get on the bus as it was so full and all the collegue kids waiting for the bus this is discusting, when a they park at the top of the sation and when you get there cant get on the bus the driver obvisous didnt want to do any more as he was talking to someone on the phone and said the next bus was following him but in fact was at least 5 mins behind, and what i dont understand is why you dont run a collegue bus from wellington to madeley and make the students use it or have to pay full price if getting an ordinary bus as after all the oap are penalised and not allowed to use the passes until after 9.30am mon-fri and when you have been at work all day the last thing you want is this hassle trying to get home and quite often on a friday afternoon you miss a 44 out in the evening and in the mornings the first one quite often doesnt come on time.
