Keeper knows more is expected

Glyn GarnerGoalkeeper Glyn Garner has admitted a disappointing first season at Oteley Road has left Shrewsbury Town’s squad with “unfinished business” to attend to in 2008-9.

Town managed only an 18th place finish in League Two as predictions of a promotion challenge proved well wide of the mark.

Manager Paul Simpson has already stated his intention to strengthen the squad throughout the summer, and is hopeful of adding a new face shortly.

And Garner admits a much improved campaign will be expected, whatever the make-up of the Oteley Road playing staff when the season begins on August 9.

“We had a good start and lost our way and the disappointments just snowballed,” said the 31-year-old, who gets married this summer.”We weren’t thinking of anything other than promotion but it didn’t turn out that way.

“The gaffer wants to change things around so we don’t know who will be here next season.

“But I suppose there is unfinished business because it’s always disappointing when a club you are contracted to doesn’t do as well as expected.”

Garner also suffered the personal setback of being dropped at the expense of Scott Bevan for the closing stages of the campaign.

But the Welsh international insists he is happy to fight for his place at Oteley Road.

“I haven’t even thought about it (a move),” said Garner. “I played 41 League games last season which isn’t bad going and I love living in the area.

“There’s going to be good competition with Scott and you also have to throw Jas (Singh) in to the equation because it’s great for him that he has got a contract.

“It’s hard for goalkeepers because two strikers usually play, four midfielders and four defenders – but only one of us.

“But there is a good goalkeeping union here. Everyone works hard and there is no bitterness whoever plays.”
