Football match raises charity cash
Thursday 8th May 2008, 11:49AM BST.
A charity football match between the Shropshire Star and Salop Leisure raised more than £1,000 for good causes. More than 150 spectators turned out to watch the match at Shrewsbury Town’s Oteley Road stadium.
Gareth Cadwallader, deputy advertisement manager at the Shropshire Star, who helped organise the match, said it had been a great evening.
“It was a good match for lots of reasons. We raised money for various charities, it was a lovely night and it was a good game,” he said.
The Shropshire Star won the match 3-2.
Mr Cadwallader said he was happy with the result.
He said: “Both teams had a good time and Salop Leisure were good, but not good enough to beat us.”
After the match an auction was held to boost the money raised. Signed football shirts from Liverpool and Manchester United raised £300.
“We don’t know exactly how much we raised yet, but with the auction of the shirts it will be more than £1,000,” Mr Cadwallader said.
The money raised will go to cancer charities Macmillan Nurses and the Lingen Davies appeal.
The squads were:
Shropshire Star: Dean Merrick, Jon Ball, Gavin Cadwallader, Steve Newman, Stuart Taylor, Mark Teare, David Burrows, Simon Burley, Matt King, Ben Chambers, Stuart Woolley, Ian Clarke, Chris Woodhouse and Andy Rodgers.
Salop Leisure: Mike Harris, Alex Herbert, Scott Higgins, Martin Williams, Clive Acres. Mark Fras, Simon Cutlip, Dylan Roberts, Juan Carlos Rivero, Dan Hamer, Paul Callingham, Mark Jones, Mark Bebb, Nick Jackson, Andrew Crane and Ally Roberts.
