Davies aiming for No 3

redball.jpgShropshire Star Snooker Knockout king Matt Davies has already set his sights on a third consecutive title in 2009.

Davies retained his crown and sealed the £250 winners cheque on Friday night with a storming 5-0 victory over Mike Dubicki, of the Raven Hotel.

A former All-England champion, Davies has now reached three consecutive county finals – winning the last two.

And the Shifnal WMC cueman admitted he would love nothing more than to extend his sensational record in the competition.

“It’s a great competition and to win three in a row would be fantastic,” said Davies.

“Hopefully the competition will continue to grow because it’s fantastic to play against players from different leagues. It definitely sharpens you up.”

Davies scored the more consistently throughout the final at Reman Services, breaks of 68, 64, two of 33 and one of 30 helping him to a whitewash.

Dubicki had his chances in the early stages and could have taken the first and third frames.

But the north Shropshire player admitted he was helpless to stop the defending champion retaining his championship.

“It was disappointing but I had a good run in the tournament,” he said.

“I didn’t have any run of the ball but Matt played the perfect game – he didn’t miss much and left me nothing off his safety.”

There was some consolation for the Dubicki family with Mike’s brother Rob scooping the £75 for the highest break for a run of 81.

Frame scores in the final (Davies first) – 82-40, 113-8, 61, 52, 57-16, 73-17.
