Work starting on new bridge

Burway Bridge, off Coronation Avenue, collapsed when thousands of gallons of water put it under immense strain.

The damage was so severe that engineers could only re-open the road by installing a temporary bailey bridge.

But that has now been removed so that work can start on a permanent £1 million replacement.

Coronation Avenue has been closed to traffic and pedestrians and is expected to stay shut until the end of September.

Traffic into Ludlow town centre from the north is being diverted along the A49 to the Henley Road Roundabout, then into town along Henley Road, Gravel Hill and Station Drive.

With the exception of high vehicles, traffic out of the town is being signed to the A49 along Station Road and Sheet Road. Outbound high vehicles are being diverted to the A49 via Gravel Hill and Henley Road.

The floods in Ludlow caused more than £5 million of damage. A house beside the former Burway Bridge collapsed several days after the bridge failed.

John Williams, Shropshire County Council’s principal bridge engineer, said the work would cause inconvenience and disruption.

“We will do all that we reasonably can to keep this to a minimum,” he said.

The work is due to finish in mid-December, though the new bridge is expected to be in part-use by September.
