Shrewsbury’s two sixth form colleges today criticised claims made by MP Daniel Kawczynski, who has called for a public meeting to discuss co-location plans.

Bosses at the colleges, which have applied for planning permission to co-locate at the London Road site, said the MP has failed to understand the concept.

Mr Kawczynski claims the position of governors at the sixth form college is “untenable” because staff issued a vote of no confidence.

But a college spokesman said: “The colleges have long regretted the failure of Shrewsbury’s MP to understand that there is far more to co-location than simply re-locating Shrewsbury Sixth Form College to London Road. We are planning for the long-term future of post-16 education.”

Yesterday, Mr Kawczynski claimed county councillor Alan Mosley acted improperly – saying a motion he proposed over co-location was “undemocratic.”

The spokesman said: “Mr Kawczynski has attacked a county councillor, who favours co-location, of acting ‘improperly’ simply because he used to work at Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology. The fact that he has not worked there for several years doesn’t seem to matter.

“Likewise, he has criticised governors of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College for continuing to support co-location despite opposition from some staff. But it is a question of responsibility.

“The governors must look to the welfare of future generations, not just the present.”
