£50,000 tobacco offence admitted
Tuesday 22nd April 2008, 11:50AM BST.
A 46-year-old man from the Shropshire border has admitted trying to dodge nearly £50,000 in tobacco duty.
Craig Perry admitted knowingly dealing in tobacco products when the duty had not been paid when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.
The court heard Perry, of Doctors Bank, Ashley, near Market Drayton, was arrested on June 1 last year.
Perry now faces jail.
Mr James Puzey, prosecuting on behalf of HM Revenue and Custom, said Perry also faces having to pay the £46,000 back under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Mr Lee Marklew, for Perry, said: “He has tens of thousands of pounds in his Post Office account, which he says comes from the sale of a property.”
The case was adjourned for sentencing next month.
Judge Paul Glenn warned Perry: “All sentencing options are very much open to me and that includes custody.”
Perry was released on bail.
