Ex-civic society boss dies

A former chairman of Shrewsbury Civic Society, who campaigned to protect historic buildings, has died.
Alan Howard, who lived in Frankwell, died at the Mount House nursing home on Monday. He was 85.
Tributes were today paid to Mr Howard, who became a member of the civic society after moving to Shrewsbury from Lancashire with his wife Margaret 20 years ago.
He was a member of the Intelligence Service during World War II, serving in Singapore during the latter days of the conflict.
A talented artist and writer, Mr Howard taught himself to speak Welsh and was involved in a number of campaigns to protect historic town buildings, most recently giving evidence at a public enquiry last year.
Joan Fidler, vice president of the civic society, said: “The society will always be most grateful for the commitment he gave to the town of his adoption. A man of many, many talents who will be missed by all of us.”
The funeral of Mr Howard, who had two daughters Shelagh and Jenifer, will be held at Emstrey Crematorium at 3.20pm on April 24.

a very sad loss. he was much needed in the town 30 or 40 years ago when councillors, planners and developers seriously damaged my lovely town
