Brittain just misses out
Friday 18th April 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Shropshire golfer Jamie Brittain has agonisingly missed out on the chance to emulate former Peter McEvoy Trophy winners Lee Westwood and Justin Rose by one shot.
The 17-year-old, who is based at Shifnal and The Wrekin, shot a final-round 69 to finish tied for third on three-over-par in the prestigious junior competition, which attracted a high class field from across Britain and Europe to Copt Heath in Solihull.
That represented an outstanding performance from Brittain who, when he entered the competition, had one of the highest handicaps in the elite field at 0.5.
The tournament was due to be played over four rounds inside two days, but fog on Wednesday forced tournament organisers to reduce the competition by nine holes.
Sunningdale’s Stiggy Hodgson eventually defeated Drayton Park’s Eddie Pepperell at the first extra hole in the play-off.
