Sorry hall subjected to attacks

Saturday 12th April 2008, 11:00AM BST.

LETTER: Last Thursday, April 3, I was at Shawbury Village Hall and witnessed the ongoing vandalism that seems to take place there.

Every Thursday evening the hall hosts a bingo session. People from Shawbury, Wem, Prees, Hadnell, and Market Drayton go every week for a nice evening out. The majority of the players are 70-plus in age.

It is very well run by Dave Roberts and Ralph Prince plus helpers, who give their free time to give us all a good evening out.

Then, last Thursday, some mindless morons decided to have some fun by throwing a fire extinguisher through the front door, letting the foam out.

The hall had to be evacuated. We went out into the car park only to find they had smashed in the back window of a new car and set fire to the inside.

The car next to it had smashed windows and a third one was covered in chips.

I am sorry that such a lovely village hall is being wrecked by idiots who have nothing better to do.

My sympathies go to the village hall committee who find all their past good work being destroyed.

Councillor Peggy Carson, Wem

Such a shame no-one ever seems to get caught.

And yet the local parish Council I beleive only seem interested in appeasing the young people, they are going to spend substantial amounts of money on a new shelter, because the present one lacks comforts ie it is open to the elements. I suggest the money that they are going to waste on them – and it will be a waste since the new shelter will soon be wrecked – would be better spent on shutters for the hall so the windows cannt get broken when the place is closed.

As I recall, the “Youth Pod” where these yobs collect was put up to replace a toilet block which they had previously trashed. Stop wasting money on these mindless morons, spend it on Police time to catch them and get them convicted for what they are – criminals.
